Valentine’s Day locked down

38F04F44-1BC6-49E2-8839-A794404A9A8A

The 14th of February is a day known for being romantic. The day paints all things red; red roses, chocolates, dresses, shirts are a common sight on the day. Lovers look up to it, those trying their luck on love also make use of the day to make impressions. This year is no year like any other, it’s business unusual, Valentine’s Day will be spent with the nation is in lockdown.

Yesterday, the Acting President of Zimbabwe and Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Constantine G.D.N Chiwenga announced an extension of lockdown by 14 days, which will elapse on the 15th of February. All non-essential movements are prohibited, and only essential services like healthcare will be permitted to operate. What it means is that lovers who stay apart may not be able to meet, gift delivery services will not be allowed to operate as they are not considered as essential services.

The announcement was received with mixed feelings. Obviously those who had expectations for the day may be disappointed. Contrary to that, the popular association, Stingy Men’s Association of Zimbabwe is excited with the announcement and has been sending out messages to show that they are clearly grateful for the extension. We spoke to one of their chapter leaders, who had this to say “The cancellation of Valentine’s Day strengthens the message we have been saying all along. Men must not spend. Better use the money for development projects not buy chocolates and roses. We also thank the leaders who heeded our call to have the country in lockdown until the 15th, this will help stop the spread of COVID.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed so many ways of doing things. Valentine’s Day would see many cosy dinners, live performances, and events to celebrate love. This year it won’t be the same, love will best be celebrated away from crowds, maybe at home or at resorts which will have a limited number of guests.

For those who had plans to travel over Valentine’s Day, it’s not bad news. The tourism sector is open. If you will be traveling out to the city, a confirmation of your booking will give you access at roadblocks. However the exemption of travelers does not mean travelers are exempted from COVID-19. We encourage you comply with all prescribed protocols like masking up, sanitizing hands, and practicing social distancing.

Please stay safe, mask up, and sanitize and encourage others to do so too, that way we can overcome COVID-19.
