Zimbabwe’s tourism industry has thrived on foreign visitors who would come to enjoy the unmatched Zimbabwean tourism offerings. Unfortunately COVID-19 happened, lockdowns have been implemented worldwide, and it’s less likely that we will get foreign arrivals any time soon. The tourism sector has taken a knock, and there’s only one way out; domestic tourism. This could be the beginning of a shift towards more local tourism than ever before.

That’s what’s buzzing right now as Zimbabwe’s star Tino Kadewere is banging goals, assisting and doing incredible stuff on the pitch in almost every game for the French League 1 football outfit, Olympique Lyonnaise. Apart from that, he has scored recognition from Zimbabwe’s First Family, who invited him to the State House and granted him the tourism ambassador role, this is another big game involvement he will have in Zimbabwe’s tourism sector.
The government has announced a 30-day lockdown, an effort meant to curb the increase of COVID-19 cases through restricting movements. This is a good step; many had been calling for it once numbers of infections started soaring and social media was filled with grief after news of bereavement were trending.
This means that in the next four weeks we will not be able to travel, as intercity travel is banned. We will surely miss the road trips, and visiting various destinations, something which gives us happiness and joy. But it’s not all doom and gloom, we just realized that we can use the time in a meaningful way to keep our enthusiasm for travel alive.
